Gran Velvet
Quelle:Homepage Alfredo Arribas
This project is a descendent of the earlier Velvet bar
of 1987 located in the centre of Barcelona. Nevertheless, Gran Velvet has very little to
do with its progenitor, with regard neither to its size nor to anything else, except for
the sly allusions to symbols. Located near one of the peripheral highways east of the
city, Gran Velvet is a multi-use space mainly conceived as a discoteque, but which can
easily host a live concert or a business conference without major internal restructuring.
Gran Velvet comes more and more clearly to resemble a machine, a mechanism that links
different uses ans spatial situations. The interior space is unified through a great
eliptical hole which, by means of three staircases and a ramp, connects the intermediate
access level with the dance floor and stage below, while the perimeter is delimited by a
strip of service areas and long bars.
A 24-meter glazed tower projecting over the inclined plane of the roof externaly
identifies the club from miles away, and accommodates all types of lighting effects over
the stage - a mobile platform which can move 4 metres vertically and is prepared to be
turned into a swimming pool. Meanwhile, the heart of the original Velvet, literally
reproduced and sealed in the lower glass cylinder, is curious witness to its own
incredible transformation. |
